Saturn's rings are heating its atmosphere, according to a new study.
Scientists announced the finding on March 30, which they say has never been seen before in our solar system.
A NASA spokesperson said: "The secret has been hiding in plain view for 40 years. But it took the insight of a veteran astronomer to pull it all together within a year, using observations of Saturn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and retired Cassini probe, in addition to the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft and the retired International Ultraviolet Explorer mission.
"The discovery: Saturn's vast ring system is heating the giant planet's upper atmosphere. The phenomenon has never before been seen in the solar system. It's an unexpected interaction between Saturn and its rings that potentially could provide a tool for predicting if planets around other stars have glorious Saturn-like ring systems, too."

Gee...
We need to more taxes on carbon to save Saturn.
I would think because no other planet has such a ring system as Saturn's in the solar system. Jupiter has one but nowhere near one like Saturn.
So what?
Of all the things no planet has ever done before, this isn’t much to write home about.
A. Saturn is outta bidness. SeeOHHH!too from Saturns should be naturally decreasing.
B. Maybe if we stopped sending probes to Saturn it’s energy may decrease faster.
As long as they save Uranus and my anus, we’ll all be safe.
Tell a democrat this phenomenon on Saturn is being caused by man-made climate change on Earth and she’ll believe you.
They must be racetracks for SUVs.
Just sayin'.
Yes, but we have seen Saturn before now.
I had an old saturn whose rings were worn and caused it to run hot. Same thing?
CC
Must be all those nasty cars up there
Most excellent
Many such would like to, meanwhile, "The most feasible explanation is that icy ring particles raining down onto Saturn's atmosphere cause this heating. This could be due to the impact of micrometeorites, solar wind particle bombardment, solar ultraviolet radiation, or electromagnetic forces picking up electrically charged dust. "All this happens under the influence of Saturn's gravitational field pulling particles into the planet"
Extrapolate the rate from the claimed age of the solar system (4+ billion) and how warm should it be?
So, if scientists on earth, in an attempt to cool the earth, deploy partials in our upper atmosphere (as has been seriously proposed) will they actually heat the earth instead of cooling it?
I heard there are rings around Uranus. So I guess Uranus must also be getting hot.
She??
