The cold case investigation grant was relative to DNA so maybe that.

Sounds like from the story it was DNA.

I sometimes go down the rabbit hole of cold case videos on YouTube. It's amazing the ones that are today being solved with DNA that was collected at the crime scene, sometimes decades ago, but was unable to be interpreted until now.

Often these cases lead to the arrests and convictions of 60-70 year old men who had thought they had gotten away with murder. In many other cases, the killers are found to themselves be long deceased but at least the case can be closed.

It is genealogy databases that are confirming the evidence and even if you've never done a genealogy test, someone in your extended family might have and that's all they need.

Did you ever see that there was one murder that resulted in a conviction because of the use of the Pythagorean Theorem. How is that for new technology?
