Former influential South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh received life prison sentences Friday for murdering his wife and 22-year-old son.
Alex Murdaugh was convicted Thursday of killing 55-year-old Maggie and Paul, 22, in a June 2021 incident outside their Islandton, South Carolina family home. He vocally maintained his innocence at the Friday sentencing hearing, claiming he would never hurt his wife and son.
“This has been perhaps one of the most troubling cases, not just for me as a judge, for the state, the defense team, but for all of the citizens in this community, all of the citizens in this state and as we have seen, based on the media coverage, throughout the nation,” Judge Clifton Newman said.
Murdaugh called 911 to report that they had been badly hurt but has denied killing them himself, admitting in trial testimony that he had lied about his location minutes before the murders after a video recording from Paul indicated he had been at the scene of the crime at the time.
Murdaugh’s attorneys claimed he lied due to being in “in the throes of addiction,” according to CNN. He was arrested in September 2021 and charged for a purported fraud scheme, in which Murdaugh allegedly hired former client Curtis Edward Smith to kill him so Murdaugh’s living son Buster could receive a multi-million-dollar insurance payout.
“Certainly the verdict that you’ve reached is supported by the evidence,” Newman told the jury Thursday. “I applaud you all for, as a group, and as a unit and individually, evaluating the evidence and coming to a proper conclusion as you saw the law, as you saw the facts.”
SPJNK.
I guess I don’t understand why this is national news? He killed two people. Your basic Chicago hoodrat does that every weekend.
I have no doubt that he committed the murders. But 90+% of the time someone finds himself in the situation Murdaugh found himself, he commits suicide, either before or after the murder. What did he gain by killing his wife and child and not himself? I guess we’ll never know.
What I said to the wife last night almost word for word.
I asked the same question.
Apparently it’s because he was a big Dem donor.................
Because it is not everyday that a powerful and relatively wealthy white person kills members of his immediate family.
No capital punishment in South Carolina?
Impossible to believe this is not a death penalty case.
Killing your child and wife is crossing a certain rubicon at least to me
Maybe it’s just me…
And you
Why was he not sentenced to execution?
Agree... if you’d kill your son, you’d probably kill anyone. As for ‘wives’ their husbands sadly are the people most likely to kill them.

There’s a way to put a stop to that but the voters are too stupid to figure it out!
Given time their body count could have rivaled the Clintons....lol
You will not be disappointed researching him.
This is like a popular true crime book. A lot of people like to understand motives, details. I used to like Ann Rule books.....she was a very good writer. I agree with you that it is weird to be fascinated by evil. I can’t kill a spider, but read those Rule books.
Somehow, he ended up on the side of a road close to his home with a superficial bullet wound to his head and a bizarre story about a hit man.
You obviously do not know the backstory which is an incredible drama. That is why people are so interested in this case. It all started with a boating accident in which is son was operating the boat in which one girl died... set off a chain of events...
I (D)on’t know.......................
Unmarried boyfriends who live or lived in the home are a bigger culprit
Guess who kills kids in the home most
Hint it’s not the man
Of course woke info disseminators like to make those stats scarce
Like female pilot accident stats and firearms used to stop crime data
