You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

That one just fell into place rather quickly.

Yay.

I posted a different quote by the same author about a year ago, and posted the entirety of the righthand side of the triptych above. He literally just arrived as the sun was setting. A minute later and he would have missed the opportunity completely.

“Sometimes I arrive just when God’s ready to have someone click the shutter.”

I’m certain that I’m not usually solving them in the proper way.

Usually when they show up I’m really tired and about to hit the sack - like now.

If I’m on my phone, it’s all the more difficult to focus, especially with the small screen and my eyesight.

Today was a happy exception - things just fell into place - usually my first guesses (which are a bad way to solve these) are way off.

There’s been a few, especially when I was using my phone, where I just gave up because it was too frustrating.

Being a darkroom wizard helps as well.

I was waiting for my wife at the doctor’s office and did one on the phone a few weeks ago, without electronic aid or pencil and paper. I was surprised that I could actually do it! It seemed easier than I expected. I used to do them in the newspaper without using a pencil, just working it out. It was difficult a first, but with practice it is the only way to do them. When recovering from hip replacement surgery, I found cryptograms on Puzzle Baron, and doing them without electronic aid (working them out in my head) was far too slow, since they give you a percentile rating afterwards, so I got into the bad habit of doing them with electronic aid, like HAL.

Since my wreck, my ability to concentrate is gone. Plus my handwriting is so atrocious that I need HAL just so I can read what I’ve already deduced. I try not to use the letter frequencies at first, but sometimes I get nowhere without them. lol

”Sometimes I arrive just when God’s ready to have someone click the shutter.”

Isn’t that also true about so many moments in our life? I truly believe that God puts certain people in our life for a reason, and certain places for a reason. Often I think about the night at a college party I glimpsed for just a moment a young man across a crowded room and thought that’s who I want to spend the rest of my life with. Turns out he had done the same and our friends put 2 and 2 together the next day and introduced us. This summer will be our 53rd anniversary. What if I had not looked up at that moment, or if he had not done the same? What if we had not had mutual friends in our lives who were able to figure out who the mystery persons were we excitedly described the next day? And that is why over the years I have learned to slow down and make note of the people I see around me and seriously consider how I am supposed to interact, especially trying to be aware when even a stranger seems to cause a heightened sense in my discernment. For maybe it is one of those times that God (some people call it fate, I know it is God) is setting up something wondrous He is causing to happen.
