Denver – Rocky Mountain High to Rocky Mountain Hellhole
American Thinker ^ | 7 Feb, 2023 | Brian C. Joondeph

Seven years ago, Business Insider published, “14 reasons why Denver is the best place to live in America.” They recommended everyone consider Denver as “your next hometown” citing a strong job market, low unemployment, great restaurants, and practical perks such as a low crime rate and good schools. That was then. How is Denver doing now as “trendy and desirable”?

In answering that question, the Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle published, “Denver becoming America’s crime capital.” That’s quite the turnaround in less than a decade, especially when we think of New York City, Baltimore, or Philadelphia as America’s crime capitals.

In 1963, an unknown singer named Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr was urged to change his name if he wanted to pursue a musical recording career. “He took his stage name from the beautiful capital city of his favorite state, Colorado. Later in life, Denver and his family settled in Aspen, Colorado and his love for the Rocky Mountains inspired many of his songs.”

The rest is history. What would John Denver think of his namesake now? Would he still, “See it rainin’ fire in the sky, the shadow from the starlight softer than a lullaby”? Probably not. Now it’s raining crime, drugs, homelessness, illegal immigrants, and many other big city urban blights.

The Chronicle, noted above reports, “Crime in the Mile High City is now worse than New York City or Chicago, and growing increasingly dangerous as the new year begins.” This includes violent crime, where on a scale of 1 to 100, Denver outranks NYC by 2.5 points, and property crime where Denver surpasses Chicago by 4.5 points. Bet you haven’t heard that on the news.

“Auto theft is now an epidemic in Denver and the second highest in the nation”, according to Denver Police Department data.

Illegal immigration and a liberal mayor are like gasoline and matches.

Now that Sean Petyon has taken the head coaching job, I think the Broncos will be just fine.

Casa Bonita shut down, ending Denver’s restaurant advantage. I see rumors of it reopening this year, however.

Perhaps it was the “rocky Mountain high” that turned it into the “rocky Mountain hellhole”? While not true for everyone, most pot smokers STILL do not realize why it’s called “dope” and if “you are what you eat” then the same applies to what you smoke. Just sayin!.

Living fairly close to the state of Colorado, I have always appreciated the wonderful scenery & certain tourist attractions they have had to offer. Now, with the group they have running the state, I am not wanting to even cross the border for many reasons, personal safety being one of them. I wouldn’t advise anyone to live there, even if their job would require it.

John Denver would still love it. He was a screaming lib. and his “rocky mountain high” - legalized marijuana - has accelerated the decline

I lived in Denver for nearly 50 years, from 1965 until 2012, attended four different parochial schools, graduated from MSCD; it truly was a great place to grow up. Started to turn sour, coincidentally, right about the time Clinton took office: `homeless` everywhere, drugs, illegals taking over, leftist politicians flourishing; the same sad story we see all over America. Someone truly should hang for what they’ve done to this nation. The left truly does destroy everything it touches!

I have lived in Denver since 1967. I will no longer go downtown or to the 16th street mall without a very pressing reason. Certainly not for dinner or a show. It’s not worth the risk. Parts of the burbs are still OK and pretty with great views but if I didn’t live here i would not e terrain moving here

And that was about the times Owen’s was out and we started our string of increasingly toxic leftist governors

Re: "I think the Broncos will be just fine"

Only if QB Russell Wilson was having a one-off bad year.

If his skills are in decline, or if his motivation is flagging, it will take years for the Broncos to recover from the lost draft picks and traded players and from Wilson's huge guaranteed salary.

That area along Colfax is a nasty Lakewood neighborhood. Last I saw, Casa Bonita still had a construction fence around the front entrance. Did NOT get out of the car.

In a democracy or republic, people get the government, policies, and outcomes they vote for, and deserve.

Ah, but we are no longer living in a democracy or a republic, as evidenced by the 2020 and 2022 elections. We don't vote for anything anymore. We cast real votes, and they pretend to count those votes.

I was in Denver last summer and the congregation of lowlife and homeless around the Capitol, along with the overwhelming stench and half-crazed behavior, was a deterrent to ever returning. What was obviously once a beautiful mountain town now felt like San Francisco.

Illegal immigration, legalize drugs, mail in voting. A recipe for disaster. Sounds like a Democrat utopia.

The key to the demise of dirty Denver is demonicrats. Drugs, legalized distruction of Capitol Hill, and legalized theft have held Denver open to become a slum.
