My high school had a rifle team, both .22 and large caliber. Archery team too. Just about as good a shot as the rifle teams. My principal would stop you in the hall and ask to see your pocket knife? He would check first that you had one, and second it was honed properly and sharpened.
Lot’s of high schools had rifle clubs. Even in NYC. My dad went to Columbus HS in daBronx. Part of the basement, below the gym was used as a shooting range.
I knew a guy that did a lot of trapping/hunting/skinning, and he was a fanatic about his blade edges. He told me that when he was trying yo join a local mountain man group that one of the members asked to see his knife, and, saying “I’ll bet it’s not even sharp,” drew it across his palm.
