Wednesday, January 25, 2023: A newly discovered asteroid that will pass very close to Earth on Friday has been photographed by an Italian astronomer as it makes its approach.
The space rock, called 2023 BU, is only about 13 to 30 feet (4 to 9 meters) wide, and was discovered last Saturday (Jan. 21) by prolific Crimea-based astronomer and telescope builder Gennadiy Borisov (the same man who discovered the first interstellar comet, which now bears his name, Borisov, in 2018)
The asteroid will pass only 2,240 miles (3,600 kilometers) from Earth's surface on Friday (Jan. 27), becoming the 4th closest asteroid ever observed apart from those that actually struck the planet, according to the Virtual Telescope website(opens in new tab). For comparison, satellites of the global navigation system GPS orbit 12,500 miles (20,200 km) above Earth, about four times farther away.
This image, however, was taken when the asteroid was still quite far, about 360,000 miles (580,000 km) away from us, which is 124,000 miles (200,000 km) farther away than the orbit of the moon.
Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi took the image on Tuesday (Jan. 24) using his robotic Elena telescope located just outside of Rome. – Tereza Pultarova
may be a shuttle for classified documents...
Let’s name it “Dottie”...
DAVOS Switzerland.......................
I think that must have been a meteor. Asteroids can be much larger (some are hundreds of miles in diameter).
From what I understand, an object coming ‘right at us’ appears as a small point of light, so there’s a poor chance of spotting it via time-lapse imaging.
are you series??
It`s a Nuclear Space Drone.
US Space Force is too busy with launching pronouns into orbit to notice it.
That would make it an assteroid or maybe a hemorrhoid?
Lol!

Good point. It makes perfect sense, but it’s humbling with regard how limited our knowledge is and how limited our ability is to control our universe.
That’s really close....
I've been on a kick about this event...so interesting. Maybe multiple strikes.
Davos. You forgot davos.
Any chance it will hit Washington DC?
On March 11, 2023, asteroid 2005 ED 224 will flyby the Earth. It was discovered in 2005 but NASA does not know where it is. I guess we will find on March 11.
It the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine …

Footfall,be on the lookout for baby elephants wearing foam shoes.🤪
Send the rock to Congress. Special delivery, of course.
I think the recent Russian (Chelyabinsk, sp?) meteor was about this size. It was an air burst, and smashed thousands of windows which cut a nimber of people. A year or two ago I was in eastern West Virginia. I heard a huge explosion which sounded like it was over the next hill. There were meteor fragments found somwhere in that region left by that incident.
Midway between Earth and the moon?? WRONG!!! More like the distance between Chicago and Los Angeles. Hopefully the distance calculated is right as well as the size estimate.
