There was a time when children were considered little adults and tried accordingly for crimes they committed. Thanks to criminal justice “reforms” from the 60’s onwards, they are now given slaps on the wrist for serious, even life-threatening crimes. If I had to hazard a guess as to why aggravated assaults have skyrocketed since the 1960’s, I’d say it’s because of these reforms. Juvenile offenders given impunity grow up to become hardened criminals.
So why has ag assault per capita tripled, but not murder? Thanks to medical advances pioneered in wartime (Vietnam in particular), trauma units are keeping grievously wounded patients alive that would previously have died.
