A six-year-old boy who shot his teacher in Virginia had stole his mother's gun from their home before putting it in his backpack and pulling the trigger during class.
The Richneck Elementary School student - who is still unnamed - is now being detained in a medical facility where professionals continue to psychologically evaluate him.
Teacher Abby Zwerner, 25, is stable after the life-threatening attack on Friday. She was shot at point-blank range - and the bullet went through her hand and into her chest.
She was giving her first grade class instructions when the child pulled the gun out of his backpack and shot her. Police have confirmed that the attack was intentional, not accidental.
Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said on Monday afternoon that more facts have to be gathered before the department can determine if charges will be filed against the boy's mother.
Drew also revealed that Zwerner made sure all of the children in her class were safe and out of the room before she attempted to get help for herself. He said that the teacher's first question when he visited her was 'do you know how my students are.'
The six-year-old 'combative' boy was physically detained by another school employee following the terrifying shooting - who he then hit, police confirmed.

So sad.
On another note, this “writer” needs some remedial training in English composition.
They will probably just load the kid up with Ritalin and send him back to school.
And it’s one isolated case like this that give the Liberals the excuse to try to pass ‘safe storage’ laws and ‘mandatory liability insurance’ laws for owning a firearm.
Well it is a UK newspaper, their English has always been a little funny.
Where’d you find that pic of the mom and kid?
If I was this teacher I’d sue for full retirement then I’d leave.
I’d put money on no father in the home
The school serves a poor neighborhood.
Black (44% of students)
White (26% of students)
Hispanic (16% of students)
—
Low-income (84% of students)
Both pretty gal’s. They have him for mental evaluation so I will reserve judgement until all the facts are in.
“ Speaking to DailyMail.com, the grandmother said: ‘The parents outside stated that their child told them a kid brought golden shiny bullets to school and was thinking about bringing his gun. The student told the parent, who informed the school.
‘And the school just yesterday got back to the parent saying the parent of the kid said it was a nerf bullet and the parent said nerf bullets aren’t shiny and gold.’”
The school is already making excuses.
This is the first story I’ve seen to source the gun.
Yeah, you shouldn’t have to rubber hose and phone book a 6 y.o. too much to get them to spill all the beans.
Too bad none of it will sink in.
Probably a few uncles, though.
Parenting FAIL.
this boy has had hate drilled into him....this is what happens when you allow whites to be lambasted constantly thru media and nobody says anything....
he has a father somewhere and a mother.....the other “parent” chose to let the kid grow up fatherless...
Leave it to the foreign media to do American medias job
is there anyone here on FR who leaves a loaded gun around so a combative 6 yro can take to school?.....what is with this total lack of responsibility......
Just the rifles. He can’t hide those in a backpack. /s
