Interesting thread. Moved to Japan recently and was surprised a chain coffee shop makes a very respectable hot dog with relish. Price: $3.75. As you'd expect, they modified their hot dog to appeal to local customers. Here's what makes it different:
- The toasted bun is more firm -- maybe halfway between a regular hot dog bun and a baguette.
- The dog is longer, less juicy, and thinner. So the proportion of dog vs. bun you get in a bite favors more bun.
- The paper that surrounds the bun is designed for easier eating. The light but sturdy paper doesn't wilt, but stays together as you steadily chomp at the dog, so it's easy to eat the dog and not get your hands sticky with mustand and relish.
- Finally, the mustard packet opens easily and allows you to draw a nice, even bead of mustard down the whole length of the dog rather than having a fat blob of mustard drop out and try to spread it with the packet or your finger.
