Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A Florida sheriff's deputy responding to a report of an injured hawk on a sidewalk arrived to find the bird of prey engaged in a battle with a long black snake.
The Alachua County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Nick Aldous recently responded to a report of an injured hawk on a sidewalk near Gainesville, and the deputy arrived to find the hawk had a black snake wrapped around its body.
Body camera footage posted to Facebook by the sheriff's office shows Aldous using gloves and towels to unwrap the snake from the hawk's body.
Aldous said both the hawk and the snake were OK after being disentangled from one another.

It looks like the deputy disrupted the hawk’s lunch. Eventually, the snake would have tired, and the hawk would have eaten it.

For that Hawk rescue to happen, it took an officer who was able to identify the snake as being a constrictor and thus, unlikely to lunge at him, with fangs bared and eager.
The Hawk had already lost enough air to pass out, was on his way to the Big Sky.
It’s good to see a large, powerful and beautiful bird like that being rescued, but as The Snake Lobby will quickly say:
“Snakes gotta eat too!”
Hawks are not known for gentlemanly behavior either.

My uncle once rescued two young hawks from a big blacksnake. Probably a ratsnake...the young hawks bit off more than they could chew. He kept one of them for a while. .

It looked like a juvenile Burmese python. They need to kill everyone of those they find.

What's not on video is the hawk flying away.
That hawk would have been dead by the time the officer had arrived if the hawk had tangled with an adult black snake, instead of the baby black snake.
The black snakes I have seen in my yard are at least 5 times the size of that black snake.
To: Red Badger
The hawk and the snake shook hands afterward, both vowed to take anger management classes, and they retired to the Tipsy Pine Tavern to quaff a brew together and rehash old times.

Florida Black Snakes (Racers) and Indigo Snakes are not constrictors.
The hawk should have won the battle and completed his meal.

The hawk and the snake have been tentatively identified as John Bolton and James Carville.

If those two rats were there, the hawk and snake could have each had one.

I had a set of Mongoose and Snake dragsters as a kid. They would go, do wheelies, and crash.
