[Vanity]--FReeper Advice Needed: LAPTOP’S WIRELESS ADAPTOR KEEPS FAILING

Posted on 12/22/2022 7:09:31 AM PST by Hebrews 11:6

It’s a Dell Inspiron 15-3501, just three months old, running Windows 11. After its first six weeks, its internal Wireless Adaptor [Intel Wireless-AC 9462] froze up, so I lost internet access. The Dell technician determined the hardware is fine and it’s a software issue, not covered by Dell’s basic hardware warranty.

So, I paid Dell $99 for a fix-or-don’t-pay phone session with their software technician. He had me try different fixes, and the ninth one worked: resetting the BIOS to Factory Defaults. Then, he offered me an ongoing service contract for $9 monthly. I declined.

Since then, the Adaptor has frozen again every week or so. Each time I have reset the Factory Defaults, satisfactorily. At this point it is a relatively minor inconvenience: it takes only about ten minutes each time to repair it, once per week.

Disable it and get a usb wifi NIC that supports W11. Looks like the s/w for the internal NIC doesn’t support W11.

Oh yeah get your money back. It won’t be the first time that a major manufacturer distributes hardware (that they are looking to get rid of) that isn’t compatible with newer O/Ss.

I came across a recent Dell workstation with a very funky offbrand NIC a few weeks ago.

Do you have the latest firmware and driver updates from Intel?

Buy cheap external usb adapter. Will cost less than any service repair or check.

p.s. once you have the usb wifi NIC installed and working, go to device manager and disable the existing one. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, pull it from the motherboard. Make to uninstall any bloatware that came with the original NIC.

That might be what he originally paid HP for. Good to find out exactly what they did.

That being said, he needs to check what version the s/w for the NIC is now by going to device manager

in the search box type in: devmgmt.msc

hit enter

I usually go to —>view—>show hidden devices

Expand Network adapters (click on the >)

Right click on the Intel Wifi Nic
Select properties
Click on “driver”
Make note of date and version
Also click on the power management tab and make sure
“allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is UNchecked.

I also disable usb suspend in the power settings of control panel.

“It won’t be the first time that a major manufacturer distributes hardware (that they are looking to get rid of) that isn’t compatible with newer O/Ss.”

Heard that.

Years back I had a perfectly functional Epson flatbed scanner that the manufacturer supported with software updates until Win 8......then the updates stopped.

I contacted Epson through email......their reply?

“We’ll send you a coupon for a discount for a new Epson scanner”

Electronics.....the bane of our existence.

Planned obsolescence. I just retired from IT in my local county supporting the 911 servers and GIS mapping systems as well as the Sheriff Department’s hardware and software.

I could tell you stories that would raise your hair.

Trust me, he doesn’t have the latest version installed, dated
12/20/2022.

That’s what I gave him.

You’re not wrong but it would be interesting to find out exactly what he paid HP to do.

I know that the major manufacturers seldom keep up to date with Intel software or AMD for that matter as they have to “test” the drivers before posting it for download.

“I could tell you stories that would raise your hair.”

I bet.

I worked for the DoD for 30 years attached to a civilian facility that overhauls US Navy aviation gear.....the last 2 were in software development and testing on the user interface side.

You really haven’t experienced pissing money away until you’ve seen it at the fed gov level.....it really is epic.
