Waste Management drivers rescue Florida man trapped under golf cart for hours

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An 83-year-old Port Charlotte man who was trapped under a golf cart for several hours was rescued by an unlikely duo — two Waste Management workers.

According to a release from the company, driver Alex Galarza and assistant driver Paulino Ortega were driving along their regular route Monday when they noticed the man trapped under a golf cart at the end of a Port Charlotte driveway.

The workers immediately dialed 911 and started providing first aid treatment while authorities were en route.

In talking to the man, the workers noticed he was showing signs of hypothermia and learned he had been trapped under the golf cart for more than seven hours. Galarza and Ortega then wrapped the man in garments to warm him until medics arrived.

“We are so proud of our drivers, who remain vigilant on their routes and are quick to offer assistance when one of our neighbors is in need,” said Todd Peres, Senior District Manager for WM of Charlotte County.

Officials with Waste Management told News Channel 8 their drivers are trained to act as an extra set of eyes and ears for sheriff’s deputies, police, fire department, and emergency services. They are also trained to report emergencies or any suspicious activity that may take place during their routes.

“WM employees have undergone proper training in what to look for and how to respond in the case of an emergency or unusual activity,” the company said. “Should anything occur while on their routes, drivers have the necessary tools to act quickly in communicating that information to 911 or their dispatcher in the case of a non-life-threatening emergency.”

Hypothermia in Tampa.
This global cooling is worse than I realized.
Blessings to the two workers.

The author is showing his bias. Dylan Abad looks like a soy boy.

That’s smart. Often they are under contract with the local county or municipality, and actions like this would tend to make the local decision makers (county commissions and managers, city councils and managers, etc.) think positively about WM.

Plus it’s just the right thing to do, civically.

It would be interesting to know how he flipped the golf cart. It’s not easy to do. I’ve almost done it a few times myself with sharp turns on an incline.

Here at Jurassic Park, we have had several incidents where golf carts were driven into lagoons after medical emergencies. And a few after adult beverages.

How interesting - we are lucky to have our trash picked up on the scheduled day by that company.

My guess is that the driver had the wheel turned and hit the accelerator hard. That is the kind of mishap that occurs when your reflexes and judgement are 83 years old.

Looks like a forecasted low of 43° in Tampa on Sunday.   So I checked and it looks like you guys in Indiana will get down to 20°.   So I checked here too, and it looks like our low in Marietta, GA will 26°.   Brrr! it's going to be cold.

Well sometimes... Have to share a short story about that. I worked for WM for about seven years in a mostly rural district. We had one driver who was a biker, bald head, ZZ top beard and all. Real righteous guy who helped people all the time, pulling them out of the sand with his garbage truck and such. We all did as an unwritten rule.

Well one day he came around a corner in a rural neighborhood and there was a drunk idiot spinning donuts in the dirt road right at the school bus stop and the bus was coming to let kids off. So Leonard jammed his truck up in the guy’s way and forced him off the road and into the ditch making him get stuck.

All good and justifiable so far... Until Leonard jumped out and reached in the car and grabbed the guy by the throat and made him give Leonard his wallet and driver’s license. Leonard took his wallet, went down the street, and called the local LE o meet him there. Taking the guy’s wallet was a huge issue and caused WM a lot of legal trouble...

Personally we all thought he was a hero... lol

Yeah, that’s taking it a bit far.

But yeah, he’s OK by me!

“Yeah, that’s taking it a bit far.

Lol, yep... Doing his “Civic Duty”...

He was a character too, fun guy to work with. WM had a suicide hotline because they thought garbage was a stressful occupation. So Leonard would call it four times a day with some reason during his route that he was stressing. And at least once a day on his days off. After about two weeks of this he come storming in to the district manager complaining that the suicide hotline hung up on him... lol

I was wrenching on these trucks as my primary position. One time Leonard called me out on a service call for a hydraulic problem. I get out there and he has a beer can wedged between a hydraulic line and one of the front fork/arms claiming he couldn’t operate it because it was an open container.

“Thought I would be cool and get you out of the shop for awhile”. lol

That job was the most fun I have ever had working for someone other than myself. Those guys were crazy fun to work with. So many crazy fun stories...

Something about Waste Management as a company. I worked for them for 7 years. and I don’t know if they still do, but they treated their employees with respect and appreciation. Good garbage guys who can use their heads are actually hard to find. It is a very demanding occupation and you are all on in high gear for 12 hours straight and still have to use your head to be safe and not bash stuff.

But union guys got no more or less than what the union asked for. Those of us who were not union were treated even better and got all kinds of perks not given to the union guys. So there was a very high level of integrity among the employees because they were treated right by the company. It was a great company to work for at the time... :)
