Prescribed Burns Planned at Wilder Ranch State Park

California state parks have announced prescribed burns for Wilder Ranch State Park starting Nov.25 through Sunday, Dec. 3, depending on conditions. Some trails will be closed temporarily for public safety, including portions of the Eucalyptus Loop, Old Cabin and Long Meadow Trail.

According to park officials, the burn will be for vegetation management, hazardous fuel load reduction, wildlife habitat improvement and other ecological benefits. Officials say the prescribed burn will enhance the health of the forest by removing duff, leaf litter and fuel buildup and restore essential nutrients to the soil and reduce the chance of wildfires.

The burns will be scheduled between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and will cover roughly 200 acres at the Wilder Ranch State Park. Park officials also say that if the conditions are not right for burning, the burns will be rescheduled.

People around the Monterey Bay area, as well as those driving on Highway 1, may see smoke on the day of the burns. If you see or smell smoke in your surroundings, Santa Cruz County officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activity and remaining indoors as much as possible.

I take the Long Meadow Trail, haven't been on the other two trails in a while.

Taken several bike rides through there on my way up the coast from SC. Glad they’re taking care of the area.

Thanks. Too bad there wasn’t more such management before the Big Basin fire. Sounds like this burn is only for brush, not forest floor.

If you had a friend visiting from England would you take them on the scenic drive beginning from the south Santa Clara County and head north to Mt Umunhum

Or

Take them to James Lick Observatory?

I would take them to the former. But if you have time the coast is always a winner. You might not have the time but I took a friend from Germany to Pigeon Point Lighthouse and then down through Pacific Grove 17 Mile Drive and Big Sur that’s always a winner.

They will be showing the film Wilder Napalm for inspiration the night before the burn.

Umunhum would be number one. Shorter drive from the valley and from there you can see the coast.

Oh, I’m there often but, the itinerary is for a friend, who is from England, and has lived here a few years.

He has a childhood friend visiting for the next two weeks and I suggested itineraries for them

I’ll probably be in Carmel next week or the following.

Going to Palo Alto today.

Yeah, I thought so as well.

They can stop in Almaden Valley or Los Gatos for a meal.

The wife & I like to go any time Monday through Thursday - they’ve got one of the few remaining piano bars on the west coast.
