How to Use Pumpkins Throughout Fall

Now comes the fun part, how to use your pumpkins. There are a ton of ways to use these, but that would take forever to cover. I’ll be breaking my list up into 5 sections today; Farm Uses, In the Home, Cooking, Learning Tools and How to Preserve your Pumpkin. Once you’ve read through all the fun ways to use pumpkin, you’ll be racing to your nearest pumpkin patch to get more so you have enough for all the great projects and recipes.

Using Pumpkin-On the Farm

Compost

This is the best use for pumpkins after the season is completely done! The best 2 ways to compost your pumpkins is to bury the entire thing into your garden bed or add it to your compost heap. If you don’t have a compost heap, talk to your local farm or CSA about if they would be interested in your pumpkins.

Animals Treats

If your farm animals are anything like ours, they love food. And for our farm, pumpkin is a great 2 for 1 treat. We feed pumpkins to our pigs, goats, horse and chickens and they love it! On top of being a nutritional treat, pumpkin is one of the ways to naturally de-worm your animals so score!

Bird Feeder

If you don’t have farm animals but would still like to feed the environment, turn your pumpkins into a bird feeder!Hang a hollowed out pumpkin half and fill it with bird seed. You can also feed other animals by cutting your pumpkins into chunks and tossing it into the bottom of your yard or near a wooded area.

Flower Planter

This is a super simple project that can brighten up your home. Simply cut a hole in the top, drill or cut some drainage holes in the bottom and fill your pumpkin with plants! Mums are a common option, with mini pumpkins being a good home for succulents. You can also put your plant in while it’s still in it’s container making it easier to transfer at the end of the season.

Save the Seeds

When you are carving, cooking or disposing of your pumpkin, save the seeds. Simply separate the seeds and guts and let the seeds dry out on a paper towel for about a week. Save for next year and plant away.
