Unilever has recalled six brands of dry shampoo made before October 2021 because of potentially elevated levels of benzene, which is a carcinogen.
The brands of aerosol dry shampoo are Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé.
According to an announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the benzene is not in the products but is produced by the propellant.
“Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening.
Benzene is ubiquitous in the environment. Humans around the world have daily exposures to it indoors and outdoors from multiple sources.”
While the exposure to benzene from the dry shampoo is not at levels that would be “expected to cause adverse health consequences,” Unilever is issuing the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”
The dry shampoos were distributed nationwide. Retailers have been asked to remove all the products from store shelves. Product information including UPC and Lot codes can be found here.
People who bought the dry shampoo can get reimbursed by Unilever.
For more information, call Unilever at 877-270-7412, between 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

My wife said these are the products that the new generation uses because they have poor personal hygiene habits of not showering and washing their hair on a regular basis.
No water needed for wash or rinse. There are a number of body washes out there as well.

One minute I’m in my CHAIR, quietly reading the text and the next minute I’m in a BOAT on a stormy Toluene Sea.
We washed our hands in benzene when I was in high school and we liked it!
Seriously, we actually did use benzene quite a bit…
We used brake clean for grease & oil when working in the automotive bays at gas stations.
Also an excellent bee/wasp killer...
LOL, the sheer number of notecards will never leave my somewhat suppressed memories...
Oh, so you can take a "shower" when you're in a hurry? Back in my day, we called that "deodorant." :-)
Wet wash cloth.
Wipe face.

ISO-meric exercise!
Dry shampoo? That’s what we did to the little kids in school. Knuckles to scalp and rub vigorously, repeat as necessary.
Unilever was a big supporter of bLM. Perhaps they should pay more attention to business.
