Since water has an extremely low specific heat, negligible thermal capacity and inertia, temperature swings in the deep ocean can wildly swing by as much as one hundredth of a degree over decades. Especially in high latitudes that have a low angle of incidence in relation to the sun reflecting most energy to space. Animal life is simply not resilient enough to survive such pressures from wildly oscillating conditions
