The Bennard family from Shelby County, Tennessee, suffered a devastating blow Oct. 6 when their two dogs fatally attacked the family’s 2-year-old and 5-month-old.
The dogs, two pit bulls named Cheech and Mia, turned on Hollace Dean, 5 months old, and Lilly Jane, 2, for no discernable reason.
Mom Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, gave her all to protect her children, using herself as a shield to try to protect Lilly Jane and receiving countless lacerations in the process, according to USA Today.
Despite her sacrifice and efforts during the horrific 10-minute onslaught, the Bennards lost both their precious babies and Kirstie was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The two dogs had been with the family for eight years and had never shown any signs of aggression, according to the report.
Friends and family have been shocked by the incident, saying the dogs had never given any sign they’d be capable of such an atrocity (though many people have said being a pit bull is sign enough).
“I can promise you those children were her world, and if there was any inkling of danger, she would have never had those dogs near her kids,” Kelsey Canfield, Kirstie’s best friend, told Fox News.
“Those children were everything to them, and they just have a really long journey ahead.”
The dogs were euthanized on Thursday, according to a tweet by the Shelby County Sheriff.
“As of now it looks like there isn’t any permanent damage other than a heart that will never heal.

I have a hard time calling a mother that kept 2 pit bulls in the same house as a 2 year old and a 5 month old a “hero.”
Years can go by with nothing happening, and then...
I’d like to blame this horrible event on gun violence.
My thoughts exactly.
All pit bulls should be put down.
I’ve known people who swore up and down that pit bulls are the sweetest creatures ever and that anyone who disagrees is just a monster. The lady may have been one of those, or has heard such things all her life. She certainly is paying the price now. I wish more people would wake up about pit bulls, but those who love them are just adamant and insistent that they are safe. No matter how many cases like this occur.
Two pitbulls in the house was a least an inkling of danger.
Negative, Putin and Trump, with an accessory charge to Tulsi Gabbard.
Two dogs make a pack. They will work together against their prey because instinct takes over. Even non-pits will do this in the right situations. Not kill necessarily, but will do it even in play against the “master.”
Heartbreaking for the family.
“Hero mother tells her stupid husband ‘no’ to pit bulls, undergoes ugly divorce gets her kids away from danger of idiot with pit bulls”
Is the only way this story is heroic.
Except guns don't attack on their own and an unloaded gun is a paperweight.
I’ve heard this story so many times before. Bowser was such a sweet little dog until junior twitched the wrong eyebrow and got mauled. As far as I am concerned the inbred breed is worthless and shone destroyed!
It’s all because of “climate change”, don’t you know!
Was the husband in the house at the time? I suspect not.
My friend has pit bulls (no young children around) and those dogs listen to HIM, and HIM only. Maybe its the breed and also I believe it depends on the gender of the dog. They follow the alpha male.
Pit bulls or part pits are growing in number, because people who like them tend not to like spaying and neutering.
They used to be about 1% of the dog population in shelters, now about 10%. Sure most shelters spay and neuter or make you put a deposit down for that, but I think they ought to put all the pits down, a pity though it is for most of them.
That wouldn’t stop the amateur shelters though.
Was this in Ukraine?
So people are so F’n stupid. How many stories does one need to read?
Now two children are dead, and the parents lives are destroyed forever as well.
Execute every pit bull.
Pit bulls are not pets.
They can be pets, but, only from a distance, just like tigers in a cage.
Agreed. Pitbulls are a “loaded gun” waiting to discharge without warning or reason. It’s just what they do because they have been bred to be that way.
t is hard to comprehend why people still adopt pitbulls as pets. While I understand that most all pitbulls may make excellent family pets, they are still notorious for unprovoked attacks and deaths upon both strangers on the street and family members. To my knowledge there is no other breed of dog anywhere that is so unpredictable, dangerous and deadly.
