The summary of the 219th day on Siverskyi Donets Front, as of 22:00 – 30th September 2022 (Kyiv time).
Due to the ongoing Ukrainian offensive in Donetsk Oblast, we’re releasing an extra summary solely focused on the Siverskyi Donets Front. The classic summaries remain bi-daily.

Since the troops in Lyman appear to have held in place rather than to have retreated when it seemed likely they would be cut off I’d guess they are more reliable troops willing to follow orders and that they were ordered to stay in place, probably for domestic Russian political reasons.
A couple weeks ago Russians in a similar situation did retreat, probably out of a mix of panic by individual elements and orders from higher ups who decided it was wiser to save their forces for a later day.
For the Ukrainians it seems the wisest course is to encircle and siege any concentrations of Russians steady enough to hold in place. For Russian troops to retreat across large areas so soon after Putin’s ceremonies would make Putin appear foolish. I expect Putin to sacrifice future military strength for domestic political considerations in the near term.
