The Big Apple will begin setting up large tents to house intake centers and cots for the flood of migrants arriving daily as the months-long influx from the southern border has overwhelmed city shelters, Mayor Adams announced Thursday.
City Hall laid out the plan as officials revealed that more than 2,000 additional migrants — predominantly asylum seekers fleeing Venezuela — had streamed into the five boroughs over just the last week.
That brings the total number to an estimated 13,600, the bulk of which — 10,300 — are staying in city shelters.
“More than 100 years ago, Ellis Island opened its doors to welcome in those ‘yearning to breathe free,’ ” said Hizzoner in an accompanying statement. “Now, more than ever, it’s clear that we are again dealing with a humanitarian crisis created by human hands.”
He added, “While other leaders have abdicated their moral duty to support arriving asylum seekers, New York City refuses to do so.”
The first of the emergency shelter facilities will consist of five tents set up in a parking lot at Orchard Beach in The Bronx.
It will have enough beds to house up to 1,000 adults, who officials say will stay there for one to four days as they do initial assessments of their health and welfare before placing them into the city’s shelter system.
The temporary buildings would be weatherized and able to withstand the cold and snow that can come with a New York winter, officials said. And they will include a dining facility and medical space.
Adams’ administration declined Thursday to provide a price tag or an opening date for the new facility, but said it would be up and running within weeks.

13,000?
That’s two days.
Send 100,000.
Here in California we have entire cities filled with them.
Hey media, is there a crisis yet or no? Still no crisis??
There's something else going on. Governors Abbot and DeSantis only sent 2,500 which means the other 11,500 were already nearby or are being sent by Democrat mayors like Oscar Leeser in El Paso.
...but yes, they need to send 100,000. Then again, they need to send every last one of them.
I seem to remember Trump having tent cities and Democrats comparing them to concentration camps.
Abbott is only making them the great sanctuary cities they claim to be. That’s what a good mentor/coach does by bringing out the best potential.
in September...
They don’t know what a max influx is... yet..
See how it’s going in 90 days.
WINTER???!
well, they bout to find out... 8^)
A reasonable guy would have asked back in the summer of 2021...if x-number cross per day....where will they be residing as they arrive anywhere in the US?
Yet, no one asked that question.
I would imagine more than 90-percent don’t speak English, and other than grocery-shelf stacking....aren’t qualified for much of any work. It’s just triggering a massive chaos to take years to settle.
They better start handing out some winter gear for camping out, because it’s 39 here in Rome, New York at the moment.
Yeah dummy, that was my father, my two uncles, and my grandparents who were separated when they arrived at Ellis Island in 1912 from Holland, and they were kept separated until they were thoroughly interrogated, and cleared of any medical conditions. They also had to have someone in the U.S. who was willing to accept responsibility for them, before they were released from custody.
"well, they bout to find out... 8^)"
We put them in the fancy hotels at first and let them order from room service.
Now the flow is overwhelming. Everyone wants to come to NYC.
We never should have done that.
Fox News reported a (D) Mayor in Texas had an agreement with NY and has been bussing illegals for a while.
Nary a peep till someone with a (R) attached did it.
Hopefully these tents won’t sit empty like the Covid hospital tents did.
Idea, invite Woodstock performers to play nonstop rock music for the tent cities until the illegals surpass 500,000. The last two Who members to headline.
Or, maybe not.
Note: Bob Dylan was pointedly asked to appear and pointedly refused, leaving the US.
“I don’t know a lot about the hippies but from what I do know I don’t like anything about them.”
