I worked years ago in a franchised fast food company district office, and sometimes audits were triggered, by unusual activity. At least one manager got in legal trouble, due to things not being in balance. They had consistent over and short problems, plus inventory usage was very unusual there.
The article never names the actual crime which is embezzlement.
