The Queen of 'banter'! Monarch's piper of four years says she was 'easy-going' and 'funny' and secretly 'liked' being called Your Royal Highness after he mistakenly called her by the title instead of Your Majesty

Pipe Major Scott Methven, who was the Queen's Piper until 2019, has recalled the 'banter' he had with the 'easy-going and funny' monarch during his four-year tenure.

The 48-year-old described being moved from the army in 2015 to live in Buckingham Palace as 'surreal', but said that he struck up a 'great relationship' with the Queen.

He said: 'She had really a quick wit as is well-documented. It was just always one-liners, I had so much sort of banter with the Queen, it was great.

'The first time when I was appointed, she turned around and said to me 'Look, the only reason you got this job is because you're the same height as me' and then she just walked away.

The professional bagpiper recalled accidentally calling the Queen Your Royal Highness in Windsor instead of Her Majesty during the royal Ascot week.

'I didn't expect it from the Queen if that makes sense. She set the bar so I continued with it and we just used to have a laugh. She was just the most easy-going person to work for.'

Mr Methven, who played at Sting's 60th birthday party in New York alongside celebrity guests including Stevie Wonder, Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr and Lady Gaga, said he used to have a 'good laugh' with the royal family in Balmoral.

He said: 'I remember one night, it was just the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and several other members of the family. The invited guests hadn't arrived so I said I would mix it up and I did movies on the bagpipes.

'I would go around the tables and it would be like Top Gun and the Prince of Wales (now King Charles) had asked if I could do AC/DC Thunderstruck.

Okay I have a question.

For those of us who have not had a Royal leader for over 200+ years, and have referred to their leader as either "Mr President" or "that asshole in the White House".

What is the difference between "Your Royal Highness" and "Her Majesty"

Prince/Princess v. King/Queen.

Your Highness is a member of the royal family in the line direct who is NOT the monarch or royal female consort.

Majesty is reserved for King or Queen.

Probably the happiest times of her life was when she was a Your Highness.

Before her dad died.

Loved the story of her dad as told in The King’s Speech.

hRH is the “title” that members of the Royal Family are given.

“Your Majesty” is how you address the Queen when you are first introduced. After that, you use Ma”am.

Princess Anne or Prince William, etc., you would address as “Your Royal Highness”. The reigning monarch (or the Queen Consort) is “Your Majesty”. In actual practice, I think you only address as “Your Majesty” at the beginning of the conversation. After that, it’s “sir” or “ma’am”.

Queen Consort is what Camilla is or what they call her on Facebook “Queen Side bitch”

Hmm...., Will King Charles now have a personal jester, or will the English press be enough?

I think attitudes toward her in the UK have changed a lot, as time has gone by. A lot of people recognize that the two should have been together from the start.

It was a bit dramatized but not bad.

Bertie was a decent human who would have been very happy to have stayed just a navel officer and his wife would have been ecstatic if he had not been royal at all.

But when the time came they stepped up and did their duty.

All honor to them for that.

Princess Elizabeth was on an official state visit to Kenya when her father died. The moment she awoke to calls of “Your Majesty” from her staff, she realized that George VI had died in the night because she had only been a “Your Royal Highness” when she went to bed on the evening previous.

At least it saved her staff the distress of deciding how to break the news to her.
