I don't think Austin's eye had a camera. And definitely no death ray. Author Martin Caidin tried to stay within the realms of the scientifically feasible.

What made no sense was whenever Steve or Jamie lifted a car high over their heads. Their limbs were bionic, but not their back or shoulders. The car's weight would have ripped the bionic arm right out of its socket.

Even as a teenager, I had that figure out and thought, no way!

Like Superman stopping a crashing plane. With the aluminum skin on an airplane, even with the strength and flying ability of Superman all that would happen is a Superman shaped hole through the plane (and some of the passengers) in the seconds before the rest of the plane crashed.
