President Joe Biden this week pushed for a ban on military-style weapons as an answer to the nation’s rise in gun violence.
But critics say little evidence supports the notion that such a ban, in force for a decade from 1994 to 2004, would reduce the crime rates gripping most cities in America.
And some jurisdictions are struggling to enforce gun laws already on the books, raising questions about how they would find the resources to enforce even stricter ones.
“The vast majority of gun murder in the United States involves handguns and has for a very long time,” Stephen Gutowski, founder of the gun policy website The Reload, told the Washington Examiner. “An 'assault weapons' ban is very unlikely to have a significant impact on overall crime, everyday crime.”
Guns that fall into the “assault weapons” category are indeed used in just a fraction of crimes , data show.
According to an analysis from the National Institutes of Health, “most estimates suggest less than 7%” of the firearms used for “crime in general” were "assault weapons."
Most of the violent crimes that occurred in 2020 were committed with handguns, FBI data show.

Since we’re going to have a gay military is it OK to have gay military style assault weapons?
Cotton-eyed Joe is already scaring the ignorant into believing that when he takes everybody’s AR-15s, they’re going to buy F-15s. The boyz elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top.
Little? It wont do a damn thing!
Our Guns are ‘military styles”? They have select fire and can shoot in full auto mode?
Would that involve monkeys?
It’s not about stopping crime it’s about control and subjugation.
Killers gonna kill and you can’t stop ‘em. Especially by taking guns away from people who don’t kill. You’re only gonna make matters worse.
“According to an analysis from the National Institutes of Health, “most estimates suggest less than 7%” of the firearms used for “crime in general” were “assault weapons.” “
The true number is less than 2%. They get to 7% by including pistols that hold more than 10 rounds.
What IS a “military style weapon”?
Is a shotgun a military style weapon? They are in common use by many branches.
is a 9mm/ .45 (Beretta M9/92 ALL 1911 types) pistol a “military style weapon” as they are in common use.
Are all 5.56/ .223 caliber rifles “military style”?
Are all 7.62x51/ 308/ 338 Bolt actions possibly ALL Rem 700s “Military Style”
Try this on for size, tentative, long winded column writer: criminals, by definition, don’t follow laws. Bans mean nothing to them. That’s why gun control laws never work. You have to be a moron to not understand that.
You don’t really think it’s to stop crime, do you?
There...fixed.
A "ban" has NOTHING to do with fighting crime.
A "ban" is intended to disarm citizens to make them compliant with Tyranny.
Democrats ARE Morons !!
So are a lot of Republicans.
Many weapons owned by We the People aren’t “military style”; they’re actual military. For example:
Beretta 92, M1911A1, Browning HiPower, 1903 Springfield, US Rifle Cal. .30 M1, US Carbine Cal. .30 M1, SKS carbine, Mauser K98, Mosin-Nagant (any of several models), Lee-Enfield (any of several models) ... Heck the Colt M1873 revolver is a military weapon.
As you correctly note, many others are functionally indistinguishable from weapons actually used by US or other military establishments.
The whole notion of banning or restricting ownership of “military style” weapons is merely a ruse to cover banning ALL weapons. They want us disarmed, so they can kill us.
If I recall, there are supposedly less than 400 people per year fatally shot by long guns not counting suicide. I wonder how it breaks down as far as crimes/accident.
FReegards
May? These people are fidiots.
