Every controversy of the last five decades, be it significant or small, has been distinguished by the the suffix '-gate,' a symbol of the lasting legacy of one of the greatest scandals of our time — Watergate.

It all began 50 years ago today, on June 17, 1972, when a motley crew of five burglars, all with CIA connections, were caught breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, then located on the sixth floor of a Watergate office building.

The attempt by the Nixon administration to cover up the politically-motivated break-in would soon drag down Richard Nixon’s presidency, and ultimately lead to him becoming the first and only American President to resign from office.

The scandal, which once transfixed a nation, remains a key part of America's political and cultural history, however long gone are the days when it was the focus of every headline and the topic of every conversation - and with that, the white-hot scrutiny of the building in which it took place: The Watergate.

“Once while staying as a guest at the Watergate Hotel, Lauren Bacall was outraged by the plastic hangers and demanded wooden replacements. The concierge recalled bringing in hangers from her house and Bacall took them with her when she checked out”

I was hoping for more pictures of Bohemian Grove. Oh well, that’s all just hijinks, anyway.

" 'I’m convinced if it hadn’t been for Martha—and God rest her soul, because she in her heart was a good person,' said the disgraced president. 'She just had a mental and emotional problem that nobody knew about. If it hadn’t been for Martha, there’d have been no Watergate'"

I’ve noticed an uptick in interest in watergate lately.....seems to be a trend of Republican “scandals” right before elections......what a coincidence.

There, across the street from the Watergate is a fantastic monument to Free Republic history. There is a hotel that was invaded and captured by untold numbers of conservative Americans from all over the country who came to DC to March For Jusitce. The date was October 30, 1998

It was in that hotel lobby, comandeered conference rooms, stairs, hallways and everywhere that a loose group of conservative activists coalesced into unity and became FREEPERS.

It was not actually a planned event..... it just happened

I liked Nixon, the same way I liked Bush, until I found out what he was really like and really up to. Nixon was all about Nixon and power. Nixon thought he was so smart but he really wasn’t and did a lot to screw up the country.

I hope that picture was done by a famous artist at least because hanging up a pic of a naked black woman with a baby pulling at her breast seems a little weird

Doesn't that pretty much describe 90% of elected officials?

Not in many parts of the world. Very common among tribes, perhaps not appropriate in the watergate hotel, but it seems like a room dedicated to that so it's kinda like a museum.
