Five friends' celebrated photo taken every five years at the same California lake is out for the world to see despite one man's recent cancer scare.
They took photo No. 9 on Wednesday, 40 years after they shot the first in 1982 at a prefabricated cabin at Copco Lake along the California-Oregon border. Their tradition went viral 10 years ago -- and again in 2017 -- when CNN.com published their story and photos.
Some of the guys openly feared it could be a photo of four friends this year instead of the five first pictured as teenagers.
"I was crushed," said John Dickson, who lives in Santa Barbara where the friends first met. "We worried there would be an empty spot on the bench where we take the picture."
Dallas Burney, seated in the middle of the series of photos that replicate the poses of the very first shot, told CNN he had a large cancerous tumor removed from his left leg in 2019.
"My cancer -- liposarcoma, I knew something was wrong for many months," said the elementary school teacher. "I was out of school for five months. I can't run anymore, but I sure can walk."
Burney walked with ease around Copco Lake on Tuesday evening with Dickson, Mark Rumer-Cleary, Jon Molony and their host, John "Wedge" Wardlaw.
They had not all been together since the last photo in 2017. Burney's cancer and the pandemic made reunions difficult.

These are always fun to see. They’ve all aged pretty well!
There’s a bunch of sisters who have done this, too. Unfortunately, I think they did lose one of their number.
That’s nothing!
Five Guys have been serving the same fries for 40+Years!...............
Overpriced burger
Love the idea. Can notice the weight addition and the hair subtraction over the years.
This is great. I have 3 grade school friends that we have recreated one photo that was taken of us around Christmas in 1984, when we were all out of college. Fast forward to 2012 when we got to all see each other again for the first time since then. We weren’t at the same place since it was a family home that had long been sold and moved from, but it was as close as we could get. We try to see each other every year since then. Missed 2020 but did get together in 2021. A trip for this year has already been postponed due to illness. Hopefully we can get another visit in before the year is over. It’s not looking good, but you never know.
None wearing a Communism News Network is a transgender suck job t-shirt?
I love these shots as well. And just brings me happiness to see suck friendships that endure the decades.
These guys are my age. Time marches on.
To look youthful as the years pass you have to actively fight the aging process . Otherwise the sun, diet, slowing metabolism and slowing dna repair will take their toll. Look at Christie Brinkley for example. Looks great in her 70s but the looks don’t come without effort.
A solid burger but overpriced.
Yup,a free heart attack with every order. I think I like the fries even better than the burgers!
At least the price is better when you order fries and you share it with a couple of people.
Dang. Father Time is a cruel adversary.
I have had a best friend from age 12 for over 60 years. We are getting together in a couple of weeks. We phone visit, text and email weekly or monthly and get together in person very one to three years despite living thousands of miles apart.
Other than my wonderful marriage and my children, that relationship is the pinnacle of Good Times.
My Mom had me beat however, she had a best friend from age 5 to 90. She passed away with a picture of that friend and other sorority sisters on her bedside table.
This is such a nice story. Congrats on long term lifelong friends. So many of us have lost touch or lost people in our lives over the years. We move, have marriages, children, jobs, just life’s responsibilities which cause us to lose touch with important people in our lives. It’s so nice to be able to maintain such ties over a lifetime.
Oh, that looks good. Haven’t had one of those for a while.
I’m in L.A. and could never get the appeal of that place. In N Out, sure but 5 Gays, nope.
