Native American mascots are being phased out around the country at every level of sports, but four Connecticut school districts are still hanging onto theirs for dear life. And it's going to cost them.

School districts for Derby, Killingly, Windsor, and Woodbury/Bethlehem are choosing to defy the state law which bars schools with Native American mascots from receiving tribal funding, Alex Putterman of CT Insider reported Wednesday.

Do native Americans really want their legacy to outlawed. Schools choose mascots to reflect bravery and courage. Now they are forced to remove Indian tribes and replace them with furry animals or reptiles.

“defy the state law which bars schools with Native American mascots from receiving tribal funding”

If they are receiving tribal funding then obviously the tribe likes being honored as a school mascot. Why does the left want to cancel Native Americans?

The school chose a Native American mascot because they were not wimps.

They do not have Native American mascots. They have mascots with names that remind one of Native American culture.

It’s good to see where there is respect for the school name and culture will exist and respect for Indian school names will continue.
My high school in CT caved fast to get rid of their Indian name. I never saw any of derogatory claims that supposed took place. However it may have been in the Nineteen thirties to the sixties that happened. Even so the Indian name seemed to be respected my town wham I was there but now it’s a generic name and mascot that I see across the country.
The name changed but I will assume the scrappy nature of the school will continue. The kids there always seem to punch in a higher weight class than the size of the school.

Keep the names, if only in tribute to the casinos that bring in the moolah.

Anderson High School in Indiana just voted to keep their Indian mascot (There’s no law to remove them in INDIANA - but there had been social justice pressure to do so) - the reason being that Anderson Indiana is named to honor an indian chief and the mascot is that indian chief so removing the ‘mascot’ is actually a dishonor to the point of naming the town.

All through my younger years, kids and adults wanted to be American Indian (AI), or pretend they were. In other forums, in discussions about consumer DNA test results, people would express disappointment they had no evidence of AI heritage in their DNA ethnicity results.

The report at the link is woefully short on details. It’s tells of consequences of defying a law, but no context offering insight as to why the law was passed. And it provides nothing on legal efforts to fight the law other than lawlessness, which seems quite odd.

It’s like the woke efforts are a natural process and not the contrived one we expect it to have been.

It’s a part and parcel of the world Orwell warned us of — no roots for any people leaves people adrift and ripe for the picking by totalitarian power.

Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia was under threat of having it’s name changed to Columbus Boulevard. The Delaware Injuns just about rose up over the though that their name would be replaced with that of the most evil white dude ever. Little did they know:

“Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr is often named simply as “Lord Delaware”. He served as governor of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia, and Delaware Bay was named after him. The state of Delaware, the Delaware River, and the Delaware Indian tribe were so called after the bay, and thus ultimately derive their names from the barony. Many other American counties, townships, and the like derive their names directly or indirectly from this connection.”

The woke brigade is swiftly expunging any reference or image of Indian culture. If it was a program to deliberately destroy it, I can’t imagine the effect would be any different.

I’m a Native American. I liked the Washington Tedskins, the land o lakes Indian maiden and other symbols. I was not offended at all. It’s crazy how this cancel culture is a cult of its own. Good for these schools they keep their mascots.

I think I recall having read that one,or more,Indian tribes have,in the past, gone on record as saying they didn't have a problem with the "Cleveland Indians" or the "Atlanta Braves". Not sure about the Washington Redskins though. In fact I'm not 100% certain of any of this but I'm pretty sure about Cleveland and Atlanta.

The “offended” are probably the same four or five people that all took the same “studies” class in college and discovered the power of being perpetually offended. The same types who say “Latinx.”
