Ben Atkin is the youngest known Briton to travel to Ukraine to join the war.
Tonight, he tells this programme about his experiences. The Foreign Office says they don’t know exactly how many UK nationals have gone to Ukraine – or how many have lost their lives.
But an investigation for this programme has heard accounts of chaos in Ukraine’s foreign legion – with claims of poor organisation and a lack of training and kit – and unverified claims that more than 20 British volunteers have been killed.

Senior US officers in the war with Russia in Ukraine
Soldiers of the 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade of the US Department of Defense (4 Security Force Assistance Brigade, SFAB) have been transferred to the territory of Ukraine.
This connection is in 2020. The tasks are education, training, consulting, assistance to “US partners” around the world. SFAB officers are preparing Odessa, Nikolaev, Zaporozhye, Dnipro for defense following the example of Mariupol, using the population as a shield, placing weapons and equipment under the cover of schools, kindergartens, hospitals. They organize channels for the supply of Western weapons and training in their use.
Directly in the organization and participation in hostilities in urban areas are SFAB officers:
- Lieutenant Colonel Sean Robert Shields;
- Lieutenant Colonel Michael Patrick Tumlin;
- Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Stephen Sylvain.

Ukraine sends willing foreign volunteers into the field to fight for them. Why would anyone expect it be any other way?
What the heck to they expect? They haven’t trained with nor can they be integrated into fire teams on such short notice.
