I wonder if they have enough fuel and a time window to head back to earth if the docking fails? I imagine they carry their own fuel for the trip back.

When you get 100,000 pieces of hardware flying in space for the first time, there are bound to be problems. The key is the system was dynamic enough to allow a real time fix.
You car does that all the time and occasionally you get a check engine light. But, most of the time, you never know it.
