As I understand it during WWII troops would often kill pigs they found feeding on human remains.
A relative of mine in his memoirs wrote about getting over to Europe just as the Battle of the Bulge was starting. He said he thought it odd that everyone was giving the new guy their pork rations.
Until he got out towards the front, with the pigs feeding on the dead Germans lining the roads.
“Yeah - I didn’t care, I still ate ‘em. Never went hungry.”
