Mel Brooks' History Of The World, Part II begins shooting in LA... over 40 years after the original classic

Mel Brooks is considered to be on the short list of comedic legends to have written, created and performed in some of the most enduring classics for the stage and the screen.

One of his most notable pieces of artistry over his seven decade career: the comedy film History Of The World, Part I, finally got a Part II after more than four decades, and has already begun shooting in Los Angeles.

According to Variety, History Of The World, Part II, is a direct sequel to Brooks' classic film, but will come in the form of a variety series, complete with eight episodes for Hulu.

Brooks, who at the age of 95, is onboard for the follow-up, serving as a writer and executive producer, alongside Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen, and Kevin Salter.

Searchlight Television and 20th Television will produce.

'I can't wait to once more tell the real truth about all the phony baloney stories the world has been conned into believing are History!' Brooks said in a statement.

Despite carrying the title Part I, there were originally no plans for a sequel when the film was released in June 1981.

It turns out the title of the movie was a play on the book - The History Of The World, Volume 1 by Sir Walter Raleigh.

The new show will follow the same format as the original film, which was made up of segments parodying different periods of world history. The Stone Age, Ancient Rome, and the French Revolution were among the time periods that were parodied.

So far there's no word on what eras will be showcased as comedic fodder in the new installment.

In the original film Brooks played five roles: Moses, Comicus the stand-up philosopher, Tomás de Torquemada, King Louis XVI, and

Spaceballs was an amazing movie—coined a wonderful new phrase:

“Ludicrous speed”

A decent Mel Brooks movie offends everyone—hard to imagine that being done today.

Mel Brooks humor is an acquired taste—not for everyone.

But—once you get hooked it is addictive like crack.

I feel the same way and it is quite dated and pedestrian compared to today’s musicals.
However, the boomer generation thought it was groundbreaking and they will always have a sentimentality towards it.
My mother called it her favorite movie.

I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the original. I’m not a big fan of musicals, so it is not one that I would go out of my way to see. I heard the remake was worse.

Wow, just wow. To me, it’s a classic. Got to meet the director, too. Same man who did “The Sound Of Music” and edited “Citizen Kane.”

I'm with you. It was supposed to be about these two gangs fighting - the Sharks and the Jets - and all I saw were sissyboys prancing around.

Yeah... I can only remmenber one tune that came from that movie. It was used as the theme song for a movie starring Richard Dreyfuss. "Let It Ride", now THAT was a good movie.. :)

It is sad to see how many people view “Blazing Saddles” as a racist movie, when it is anything but.

Especially since Richard Pryor was one of the writers.

I purchased an anniversary edition of it, and they had extensive interviews on the making of the movie, and it was funny to hear Clevon Little (Bart) talking to Burton Gilliam who played the younger cowboy (Lyle) who was racist, and Burton Gilliam felt uncomfortable reading the script, and Clevon Little had to keep reassuring him “I know you aren’t a racist-this is a movie, and it is for effect-say anything you want to say, any way you want to say it, and it won’t bother me!”

I find the same people who think the movie is racist are the same kind of people who believe the 3/5ths Compromise was done to lessen the value of a black life.

There’s not a snowflake’s chance in Brooklyn that it will be as good as the original (and the original was far from his best work).
