And when they turn you back on, some things like memories do not start up. You are aware that something is missing, but not the particular memories or emotions associated with those memories.

It is possible to recover some of them with time, but you have to start picking up the history and events you can recall, and see if you can reconnect and rebuild backwards.

If the trade off is between loss of certain memories and emotions and death I know which one I choose. (Some memories, a bad marriage for example, you may wish to forget!)
