Year without a summer 1816, caused by Mount Tambora exploding in Indonesia. They say a lot of people died around the world because their crops failed.

I know of three direct ancestors who died in 1817 in an area hard-hit by famine--at least one of them died of starvation and probably the other two as well (the parish records for that village are lost so I don't have a cause of death for them).

Something like 300,000 people died in Ireland as a result of the Year without a Summer. (The ancestors I just referred to didn't live in Ireland...but I had ancestors living in Ireland too at that time, just don't know if any of them died of starvation.)
