South Carolina is ready for death by firing squad after shortage of lethal injection drugs left 37 on death row waiting execution

South Carolina has given the greenlight to firing-squad executions, a method codified into state law last year after a decade-long pause in carrying out death sentences because of the state´s inability to procure lethal injection drugs.

The state Corrections Department said Friday that renovations have been completed on the death chamber in Columbia and that the agency had notified Attorney General Alan Wilson that it was able to carry out a firing-squad execution.

The state had blocked executions last May after its new capital punishment law allowed death row inmates to choose death by electrocutions, lethal injection or firing squad, with the state not having the proper procedures in place for the later two options.

It allowed death row inmates Brad Sigmon and Freddie Owens, both convicted murderers, to delay their executions for a lack of options, but if the state Supreme Court approves the new firing squad policies, they could be the first to be executed by the method in 12 years.

According to officials, the death chamber now also includes a metal chair, with restraints, in the corner of the room in which inmates will sit if they choose execution by firing squad. That chair faces a wall with a rectangular opening, 15 feet away, through which the three shooters will fire their weapons.

State officials also have created protocols for carrying out the executions. The three shooters, all volunteers who are employees of the Corrections Department, will have rifles loaded with live ammunition, with their weapons trained on the inmate's heart.

What’s wrong with using an overly generous lethal dose of fentynal or heroin?

Do they still offer you a cigarette during the firing squad? I quit smoking 20 years ago but even though I think it’ll kill you, it does give you a little more time to tell people to eff you very much.

Hopefully, the Corrections Dept. will take the issue of privacy seriously, and be sure that the names of the men doing the shootinhg will remain classified and never made public.

The media would like nothing more than to stalk, pester, or harrass these Marksmen and their families in an effort to name and shame them. I can imagine a reporter talking to a child of a Marksman asking: “Are you proud of your Daddy for shooting people to death so your Mommy can pay the bills?’

You can’t shoot the Pink Panther, they’re protected. Shoot the Inspector.

I may be wrong on this but I believe they draw names like court duty. When they have 5 citizens willing to do their duty they step up to rifles which are pre aimed and pull the triggers. Only one rifle has a live round. The rest are blanks. No one knows who fired the kill shot. I believe this is how Utah does it.

Finally, a sensible method of execution of murderers.
You pick six shooters and hand them rifles and tell them one is loaded with a blank.

Fentanyl is cheap and plentiful. But you could auction off the firing squad duty to interested parties and make a buck.

I heard the opposite. Only one rifle has a blank. That makes more sense. With only one live round, the prisoner might only be wounded if the shooter was having an off day.

What’s wrong with hanging? Cheaper and works every time it’s tried.

Wouldn’t lack of recoil be a tipoff to the rifle(s) that had the blanks?

So the 5 idiots on the firing line shoot the criminal in half? Why not just feeding him into wood chipper? I don’t think this is just a walk up and shoot the sob event. I may be wrong but 5 rounds from a rifle gonna get messy. I shoot things and I know. Bullets damage meat.

There’s quite a difference in recoil between firing a live round and firing a black.

I couldn’t believe the title.

Hard to understand why they can’t get lethal injection drugs.

A blank can be loaded with a more explosive powder, duplicating the recoil of a normal cartridge. From what I’ve seen, the executee simply slumps afterwards. No cleanup needed.

To reduce recidivism, such executions should be held in a prison’s exercise yard.
