Was this ‘battery pack’ installed by the same company that provides your landline service?

It’s Verizon, so it would be. Except that we have to plug it in…..to the outlet that is closest to the house input. It’s nothing but a simple battery pack with plugs.

Well, I’m not sure I understand, but if you actually still have an old-fashioned landline I’m thinking that Verizon will be phasing those out.

Yes. We had to go to fiber-optic. It’s still a landline but it does not have independent power so is susceptible to utilities outages.

Even the 'urban outdoorsmen' dressed decently and were helpful on the weekends. I had one dude (Jacques, I think?) who I'd pay $20 to find me a parking space for the weekend, and then I'd drive around the block.

Son of a gun. We had one named Jacques in our neighborhood in South Philly in the early 90s--he would pick up your newspaper off the front step, tell you someone tried to steal it but he stopped them, and hope for a tip, and similar scamettes. Once, however, he saw that I left my keys in the front door lock and did return them, to my great gratitude and large tip. xHe as a relatively honorable grifter. He would wash cars and do odd jobs, but he was very rough looking. 38 going on 50. Maybe he moved to DC for better pickings.

I thought it was a pretty safe place. But in 1991 I was working a security gig at Saint E’s in Anacostia, so what do I know?
