New Jersey Turnpike Authority officials approved a $10 million agreement to rebuild two Garden State Parkway service areas, including one that has been criticized by Bloomfield officials for including a Chick-fil-A restaurant.
The agreement, approved by a unanimous vote by the board of commissioners Tuesday, would reimburse Applegreen Ltd. and Sunoco for $10 million the companies would spend to build new facilities at the Vauxhall service area on the Parkway north in Union and at the Brookdale Service area on the Parkway south in Bloomfield.
The Turnpike authority runs the Garden State Parkway.
A Shake Shack, Popeyes, Dunkin’, and a convenience store will be opened at Vauxhall on the Parkway North. Restaurants at the Brookdale South will include Chick-fil-A, Burger King, Starbucks, and a convenience store, Turnpike officials said in a Jan. 3 announcement.
Plans to include the Chick-fil-A at Brookdale south were criticized in January by Bloomfield Mayor Michael Venezia and Councilman Rich Rockwell because of past stand by the franchise on gay rights issues and the company’s past support of anti-LGBTQ lawmakers and groups.
Venezia could not immediately be reached for comment after the vote.

PING!
Isn’t he behind the times? Isn’t Chick-Fil-A a woke biz nowadays?
That’s what I thought. Truett Cathy’s son, Dan, has taken the firm downhill.
The Mayor needs a visit from one of the guys from Silver Lake.
Garden State Parkway NJ... it’s like driving through the colon of a large ass.
As long as they don’t put in a McDonald’s or Walmart I’m good. No one, even in New Jersey, should have to be exposed to that crap.
I believe the existing Bloomfield rest area already has a McDonald’s.
I don’t know why any rest area would want a restaurant that is closed on Sundays.
My bet: Revenue from six days of CofA is higher than the revenue from any other chain.
That said, we brown bag it. Fast food has gotten just way too crappy and overpriced.
CFA...
“I believe the existing Bloomfield rest area already has a McDonald’s.”
Those poor people there.
“I don’t know why any rest area would want a restaurant that is closed on Sundays.”
Interesting to see if they’re allowed to be closed on Sundays, particularly given the amount of family travel on those days.
Maybe the mayor and councilman can be time-honored with their names on the toilet stop if they’re successful.
Union/Essex county are the scary parts, otherwise it’s a really nice highway. Except for the other drivers.
Chik Fil A folded and embraces the gay, plus supports the dreaded blm.
Remember, white folk should shine black folks shoes, according to their owner/boss/HMFIC.
Surely they will be okay with glory holes in the restrooms now.
Allowed? That is a private business that can set it's own hours of business.
What the hell is wrong with you and that question?
If you bar them from a franchise license, that's one thing that can be fought in the courts and the court of public opinion, but hours/days of operation, NFW.
Next it will have to be a license to sell chicken.
“Next it will have to be a license to sell chicken.”
That’s the health department.
But regarding operating hours, if they’re given a concession, then the entity giving the concession can set conditions in that contract. Don’t like the contract, don’t sign up. By your logic, would you be fine with all of the gas stations on the Parkway using banker’s hours?
C,mon Bob.
There is a major difference between someone on the parkway that NEEDS GAS and someone that wants chicken.
I use logic, you are using slow joe's 'logic'.
Sicilians?
Indeed. When you’re in a construction zone, and half the people are doing 75 when it’s rated at 45.
Is the mayor a queer?
