The idiots never mention wind direction: if you and your family are fortunate enough not to have been within range of the blast, thermal, and direct radiation pulse from the weapon(s), you need to see which way the wind is blowing and get upwind, fast. Hiding out in your basement will only protect you for a limited time and any friends or neighbors who show up seeking help who have been exposed will be exhaling radioactive material in your "safe" area.

Better to be in the woods, away from everyone else and upwind.
