I live in a moderate flyover metro area. The local news companies have been captured and are usually owned by bigger conglomerates. The local guys mostly operate with skeleton crews. They barely have enough people to provide any meaningful local coverage. Shootings, bad weather and sports are easy to report on..

I watched that take-over happen in a small rural county seat over 45 years. Moved in 2020 to a smaller, poorer area that is about 50% vacation homes/resorts, etc. Here, the paper is locally owned and apparently has been for a couple of generations. And, while thin, with perhaps 4 pages of local ads, the news is local, relevant and the news pages dense with type, not colorful pics snapped by an editor with space to fill.
Oh, and there is no reflexive virtue signaling or tribal politics within the news articles. Clear, well-written and informative. Period.
They won’t succeed in taking over print here. Too small a market and there are large, affluent markets of leftists within 100 miles South & East which will keep them occupied for a while.....hopefully until I’ve passed.
