Nasa James Webb Space Telescope sends back its first image
The Independent ^ | 11 February 2022 | Jon Kelvey

Posted on 02/12/2022 12:14:13 AM PST by zeestephen

The blurry image appears to show 18 different blobs of starlight – though they are actually all the same star, shaken up because the pieces of mirror in the telescope are not yet properly aligned...Over the next month or so, Nasa's engineers will adjust the telescope so that those 18 dots merge into one..."The entire Webb team is ecstatic at how well the first steps of taking images and aligning the telescope are proceeding." According to the press information released before the launch, NASA was not going to release ANY images before the telescope was perfectly aligned and sending back perfect images.

The reason?

NASA thought the general public would be hugely disappointed at the first images.

Good to see that common sense and full disclosure have triumphed over many months of pre-planned silence!

No.

It has 18 mirrors.

Each mirror must be adjusted within a tolerance of 10 nanometers before all the mirrors focus as one image.

Because of the extreme cold, only slight adjustments are made over many months to avoid any possibility of damage to each panel.

I saw the image on the evening news tonight and was surprised they’d released anything so soon. I look forward to them getting the mirrors aligned and seeing what this telescope can show us.
At least I won’t have to wait as long as I did from New Horizon’s launch to seeing images of Pluto. :-)

Has anyone every thought that the two space telescopes NASA has launched are called the Webb and Hubble?

Sorry no I don’t......But doesn’t the Telescope look grand out there!

I don’t follow these often enough....same with the ‘Characters’ running around on Mars. But I love looking at the photos they send back. So very fascinating.

This “selfie” was created using a specialized pupil imaging lens inside the NIRCam instrument that was designed to take images of the primary mirror segments, instead of images of space. (NASA)

"This amazing telescope has not only spread its wings, but it has now opened its eyes," Lee Feinberg, Webb's optical telescope element manager at the NASA

Re: Webb and Hubble

Almost every thread I have posted on the James Webb Telescope someone has mentioned the Webb Hubble connection.

Great close up.

Taken by the ride-along astronaut who brushes the space dust off the mirror every morning?

I’m waiting for someone to ask if the James Webb telescope is named after the former Virginia senator who wrote pornography on the side.

I want a refund.

LOL, just kidding. I understand perfectly they are in the process of aligning the mirrors and it’s going to take several more months before they’re there. And when they are, I’m sure Webb is going to be hitting us with some mind-blowing revelations about this old universe we live in on a regular basis. Go get ‘em, NASA! Can’t wait.

The Webb telescope is going to show us that the science is not settled.

There’s a James Webb Space Telescope website that shows the entire progression of self-deployment over several months. Sorry for no link...
