Jeremy Giambi, former major league outfielder and first baseman, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his parents' home in Claremont, authorities said.

A lot of athletes who shoot themselves shot themselves in the chest because they had CTE and want the autopsies to show they had it.
Is CTE a big deal in baseball? I feel hits to the head would be rare compared to football or hockey.
It’s probably just pop psychology, but I’ve always heard they shoot what hurts. Some in mental anguish, to the head. Others broken-hearted do it to the chest.
Concussions are common in many sports.
So sad to feel all is lost and taking your life will ease the pain.......RIP and prayers up to the family.
He was given a harsh portrayal in Moneyball
Anyone here thinks it was a cowardly act?
I think it’s just sad.
I understand why you would say that, but no. I think the old adage ‘don’t judge me without walking a mile in my shoes’ is a good one. Who knows what kind of pain he had in his life. I think it’s healthier to focus despondency as motivation and intensity to take down what you think is evil in the world, but that’s not easy to do.
Pitcher Donnie Moore's suicide was directly attributable to a game he also lost in the playoffs.

Leaving family members behind to suffer in the aftermath is unconscionable. I’d have to be in some real physical pain to prefer death. It’s the ultimate selfish act.
Having said that suicide should be legal. People have the right to do what they want with their own bodies. It’s informed consent.
I was going to say something about how cowardly it is to off yourself at your parents’ house but I think I’ll just keep it to myself.
That is cruel to blame him for not sliding. That was a totally unexpected play by Jeter. On the other hand, look at Ralph Branca, he reversed it and made a second career at Old Timers Days, reunions, and card shows for many years after the home run.

Has anyone ever been prosecuted for suicide or attempted suicide?
My little brother, 14 years my junior, killed himself just this last Monday. His selfish act began 15 years earlier when he decided to take hard drugs. During those years, he trained us (his siblings) not to ever trust him. The help stopped, the money lending stopped, the expectations for sobriety stopped. The final act of jumping off of a building was just an aside - as he really selfishly killed himself years ago. I already mourned him and didn't even realize it until yesterday. Anyway, you just made me think about the perspective of a "selfish act". Such a waste of a life of a musically talented, otherwise sweet, good looking kid.
I suspect he played other sports beside baseball. CTE is being found in kids who only played contact sports in high school.
*I was going to say something about how cowardly it is to off yourself at your parents’ house but I think I’ll just keep it to myself.*
Understandable-I don’t think that way. As I see it every man has every obligation to live up to his potential, no matter what his background is. If one man’s job is to clean someone else’s toilet he should do it to the best of his ability. There just may be 5%-10% of the men out there who should leave this earth now so that the rest of us can get on with our lives and thrive. Who’s gonna tell them they should off themselves? I’d tell them not to leave a mess for someone else to clean. Giambi didn’t.
