So silly, as someone who has lived next to that lake all my life and as someone who looks out on it every day. I can tell you this happens a lot. It requires a cold period to cause the ice layer, then snow. And the ice needs to be pushed near shore so you can see it. I am looking out at it now, and the ice flows are out about a football field away. But when they come nearer I will see it. I see it about half the winters.
I need to get a drone. No, I don’t just want one: I NEED one. I keep thinking I would like one of those e-bikes - and I would like it a lot - but a drone is cheaper and much handier to have.

Even here in Southern Connecticut, the local ponds and rivers are mostly frozen over. Do I walk on them? No. But I do like to go walking by them and then going home for some hot chicken soup.
