What about Steve Allen & Jack Paar? They were there before Johnny Carson (who was great at it). Allen was the first, then Paar, then the “pioneering” Carson.

Yeah, that caught my eye also.
Steve Alan was a funny guy. He was sharp as could be too.
No, Carson was not the Premier Tonight host.
He’ll never be eclipsed though, IMO. He took it and ran
with it and put in an amazing run.
I miss the guy to this day.
