The eruption of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano, which sits on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, sent tsunami waves across the Pacific Ocean and was heard some 2,300 kms (1,430 miles) away in New Zealand.
[O]n-site instruments were likely destroyed in the eruption and the volcanology community was pooling together the best available data and expertise to review the explosion and predict anticipated future activity.
Saturday's eruption was so powerful that space satellites captured not only huge clouds of ash but also an atmospheric shockwave that radiated out from the volcano at close to the speed of sound.
Photographs and videos showed grey ash clouds billowing over the South Pacific and metre-high waves surging onto the coast of Tonga.
There are no official reports of injuries or deaths in Tonga yet but internet and telephone communications are extremely limited and outlying coastal areas remain cut off.
As the superheated magma rose quickly and met the cool seawater, so did a huge volume of volcanic gases, intensifying the explosion...
Some volcanologists are likening the eruption to the 1991 Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines, the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, which killed around 800 people.

Gee...I wonder how much “greenhouse gas” the eruption put into the air? Probably more than all fossil fuel burning for years in comparison.
Very cool!
But it’s certified Organic.
...and just like that, all the sacrifice the world has made in their standard of living so the poor old earth would not suffer from our pollution and she goes and takes a dump on the world.
If there was not one human on this planet, it would still be “polluted” since the earth itself is the biggest polluter.
And china rejoices! Stupid Ignorant environmental greeny caca idiots! I want an electric car like I want ALL my teeth pulled!
It was a huge Phreatic eruption-explains the sudden BLAST. It was explained to me that one can see it in the blast cloud after it let go. Lots of steam.
Since it was far down in the southern hemisphere, we shouldnt see to much in the air in the N hemisphere. But, look to see if the sky is a tiny deeper blue and the sunsets are a tiny more pink color.
They are trying to determine how much has been put into the upper atmosphere. South of the Equator will see the most effects if any.
Example; Pinatubo was a VEI 6, St Helens a 5.
So if you take St Helens and stand as ground zero-Pinatubo being a 6 was at ten feet. A 7 would be 100 feet, and an 8 would be 1000 feet. Krakatoa was a 7..If I remember right.
My bet is that this one will be at about a 5 because of it being largely under water.
They’ll determine it soon.
BTW, one of the biggest killers in recent history was one in Iceland-abt a VEI 4 which went on and on and pumped massive amounts of gas into the air.
I’ve seen some preliminary reports on the eruption. Guesses are in the range of VEI upper 5 to lower 6 on the Saturday blast. There was a smaller eruption on Friday. Vesuvius(79 AD) and Mt. Halens eruptions are estimated to be in the 4-5 VEI.
With that eruption, all the years of the phony climate-change progress went into the crapper...
At least the small progress that hadn’t already been barfed away by the 69 volcano eruptions in 2021 in places like, for example, Iceland, Kilauea, & La Palma...
In fact, as we post today, there are 19 volcanos barfing their guts out right now...
Not to mention that huge belching gas-well fire that has been burning for many decades...
Hockey stick be damned...
OK..I looked and Krakatoa was a 6.
So if this one registers officially at a 6, we have a eruption as large as that and Pinatubo.
The Professor appears right..if that thing was largely above water...
Southern hemisphere will see effects. Interesting to see the weather down that way this coming winter.
We got to pass the word onto the Kalifornians.
Just so they can run around, crashing into each other in panic. OMG! We are all going to die!!!
Remember, after all they had a catastrophic 2 foot tsunami hit after. NOBODY gets two foot tsunamis EVER.
This thing probably emitted more CO2 than the next 20 years of electric cars will save.
Capt. John Voss on his voyage around the world in a First Nation’s dugout canoe, had an encounter with a sea of pumice, from a similar event! His journey was very historic and worth reading! The pumice was/is the residue from undersea volcanic action(s).

Yeah, that's just somebody's guess. What do they know?
Just kidding...and, are they kidding? Of course they were destroyed. Duh.
Can’t wait for Yosemite to ring the bell.
green house gas-—for years? Actually that would be “forever.” These things move a lot of stinky stuff. The make a million smelly trucks feel like a breath of fresh air.
I live on the lower slope of a Volcano, on an island that has an active volcano, and also experienced Tsunami damage.
What is the big deal?
I also echo others here, Democrats saying the sky is falling and always crying “wolf” are very tiresome. But it is illegal to obliterate them. So be tolerant.
The Geologyhub channel on Youtube said it is probably VEI 4.
