Probably has to do with hundreds of years of royal inbreeding. I recall the story of Nicholas Alexanders young boy playing with his collection of army men.
A rat chewed on some of them. The palace guards trapped a bunch of the rats (live) and then they executed them (by hanging iirc) for the boy. With his play army men guarding the rats and watching.
