Search-and-rescue volunteers discovered the body of Rory Angelotta, 43, near a residential neighborhood and roughly 3 miles from the boundaries of the Northstar Ski Resort, the Placer County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Saturday.

Over six days, more than 200 people searched for Angelotta using skis, snowmobiles and a helicopter before suspending the effort. During that period, a freak storm caused whiteout conditions, subfreezing temperatures and dumped over 7 feet of snow.

The sheriff's office said because Angelotta had traveled a “considerable distance” from the resort, the area where his body was found near a residential area in the town of Truckee was not included in the initial search area.

When I see Truckee, I think of the Donner party. A place of loss and despair.

In this era, I view such stories with little sympathy.

“Darwinism.”

3 miles is a long avalanche. Time will tell if his story ends up on Discovery ID

“3 miles from the boundaries”

“dumped over 7 feet of snow”

EPIC.

Try to stay in a group.

Whenever anyone asks me if I think there is global warming,
I say, “You better hope so”.
Cold will kill you.
I hate winter.

Try to stay in a group.

So you have somebody else to eat? (unless you are the food).

He likely skied out of bounds on the steeper runs of the north side of the ski area.

Probably got lost and bushwhacked his way north towards town but didnt get there in time before the rest of the storm hit. It wasnt a freak storm, just a big one that went on for days...which is not unusual in the Sierra, no matter what the climate change morons say.

He shoulda been found by his phone but probably that ran out of battery power early on or he could have just called for help. There is cell coverage over all of that area.

When you leave the ski area boundaries, you assume all risk. Here in Colorado, we have skiers every now and then that ski out of bounds and end up dead, usually in avalanches. It’s not necessarily against the rules to do so; some ski areas have gates that allow exiting the boundary, but they all have warnings at those gates about the risks.

when I skied Gran Targhee, the staff told us to stay with a buddy. they recovered bodies in the spring... if you went off the trail and hit a tree, the snow fall off the tree would bury you without a trace. that was in the 80’s.. no cell phones then.. and thats what 30-40 feet of snow will get ya!

Well, if that is the case, he like all self centered adventure seekers did not assume the risk of 200 rescuers and air support.

“Probably got lost and bushwhacked his way north towards town but didnt get there in time before the rest of the storm hit.”

My thoughts too. How tragic.

I have heard of “Truckee” somehow.

It almost seems like it was in an episode of forensic files.
