Hunters Kill 20 Yellowstone Wolves That Roamed Out of Park

Park Superintendent Cam Sholly first raised concerns last September about wolves dying near the park border

Twenty of Yellowstone National Park's renowned gray wolves roamed from the park and were shot by hunters in recent months — the most killed by hunting in a single season since the predators were reintroduced to the region more than 25 years ago, according to park officials.

Fifteen wolves were shot after roaming across the park's northern border into Montana, according to figures released to The Associated Press. Five more died in Idaho and Wyoming.

Park officials said in a statement to AP that the deaths mark “a significant setback for the species’ long-term viability and for wolf research." One pack — the Phantom Lake Pack — is now considered “eliminated” after most or all of its members were killed over a two-month span beginning in October, according to the park.

“Beth Dutton did it.”

She’d make a robe out of their pelts and wear it to a PETA meeting! Love that show!

For the life of me I can’t understand the appeal of hunting and killing charismatic fauna like wolves. Deer, elk etc, sure, provided you actually eat them, many Americans’ primary source of meat. A farmer or rancher could understandably have to kill wolves on occasion for livestock protection, although I don’t by any means endorse the idea that ranchers have a right to exterminate any wildlife that’s a threat to their business. Setting out to kill wolves for sport for its own sake is perverse.

This is like how the Dems treat their black voters. If they leave the ‘reserve’ (plantation) its OK to kill them.

Agree. If they kill some cattle then comp the rancher. I’ve been a hunter all my life but these endangered animals, predators or not, should be protected.

If they kill the rancher, friends or family, how much should the families be “comp’ed”? Maybe Yellowstone should invest in fences.

The wolves are canadian wolves introduced in the west and decimate the elk population, I live in Idaho and they have been extremely hard on the elk herds, The game animals actually generate income for the states while these non native animals don’t.

Those probably were the stupid wolves anyway. Or maybe just lazy. Or both.

In any case, they needed to be culled in the interest of improving the gene pool.

” A farmer or rancher could understandably have to kill wolves on occasion for livestock protection, although I don’t by any means endorse the idea that ranchers have a right to exterminate any wildlife that’s a threat to their business”

Really?? Just figure that every one of those cows standing out in the field is a $1K bill. How many of those do I deserve to lose? Do you have a bunch of $1K bills to let rot in the fields or to feed to wolves?

There is a reason we exterminated wolves in the first place.

Or is it just okay because the feral govt will offset my losses by giving me a tiny fraction of my money that they took from me at the barrel of a gun?

How about this? You want wolves, fine. You slap a radio collar on it and pay for the tracking. It kills my animals, you buy it at whatever price I set, out of your pocket.

Says the dandyxx.

You don't like to hunt don't do it.

I'd love to see camping, surrounded by a 15 pack of wolves, and then get your opinion on killing wolves.

dandy man? indeed.
