No, they are absolutely not interchangeable. It may offend Baptist sensibilities when they hear the word sex (believing it’s a dirty word) but it doesn’t change the facts

Things (nouns) have a gender - Masculine/Feminine. People have a sex - Male/Female. They are not synonymous.
