Someone took the liberty of recording the first two hours of MTV and uploading it to YouTube.
I've thoroughly enjoyed watching it! Of course, the display quality isn't what we've grown used to and there's an occasional glitch in the recording. This was early VHS.
It's everything, old commercials, and bands I've long forgotten or never even remembered.
First five videos:
“Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles.
“You Better Run" by Pat Benatar.
“She Won't Dance With Me" by Rod Stewart.
“You Better You Bet" by The Who.
"Little Suzi's on the Up" by Ph.D
First four commercials:
MTV (of course)
The Bulk school binder
Superman II
Mountain Dew (with only white people, weird)
Anyhow, enjoy!
I had no idea how many massive hits he was a part of until I read is Wiki page.
And while most people regard The Buggles as as Trevor Horn and Geoffrey Downes, how many people are aware that this third man in MTV's first ever video is Oscar-winning film composer Hans Zimmer?
I certainly didn't know this until now.
And a wicked good bass player. I will admit The Art of Noise is one of my guilty pleasures.
Not one of my favorites but it is OK. His best work was with Yes and the the two Buggles albums are shear magic and delight. I never get tired of listening to them.
The 80’s had a lot of fun music. I was lucky to have my own business and could listen to WHFS in DC all day long.
That was Gary Richrath's mom.
Richrath was such a monster awesome guitarist. Just incredible. And REO was HIS band! But he had his demons (alcohol and cocaine) and after Hi Infidelity made the band wealthier beyond their wildest dreams, singer Kevin Cronin, in a perfect example of Machiavellian politics, leveraged Richrath's demons against himself and forced him out of the band he founded.
Cronin wanted to write nothing but power ballads, the songs that made them rich.
Richrath would spend the rest of his life as an alcohol and drug-addled recluse. Before he passed away in 2015, however, he made an appearance at an REO show. Massively overweight and lacking the chops that made him famous, it was a bittersweet swan song.
This is the Gary Richrath that I like to remember. Damn, this guy could shred a Les Paul into a Marshall amplifier like nobody else.
