The James Webb Space Telescope team is working on a communication issue between the observatory and the launch vehicle system. This will delay the launch date to no earlier than Friday, December 24. It was scheduled to launch on December 22. NASA will provide more information about the new launch date no later than Friday, December 17.

Good. Delay it a year if you have to. This is not Hubble. There is no fixing it if it doesn’t work, it is being sent too far away to service.
Too comp!icated, origami contraption in space? it wont last a year, if it even manages to deploy everything right the first time.
Let’s pray that it works.
Fingers crossed I really hope this project works!
I saw a YouTube vid on what needs to go EXACTLY RIGHT for this thing to operate. I have no idea why they figured it needed to be so incredibly complicated.
The vid said that the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars landers only had to go through ‘seven minutes of terror’ when they landed. The Webb will, in essence, go through MONTHS of ‘terror’ (for those monitoring it on the ground) as it deploys and places itself in its proper place.
IF it works, it’ll give us a fantastic new view of space and what’s ‘out there’. As for me, after looking at what it’s going to have to go through to do that, I’ll give it a 50% chance of actually working...and that’s generous. It’s probably going to end up being a multi-billion dollar waste.
Geo orbit of a million miles is cool, but difficult. If it’s not right then we have a 10 billion dollar piece of junk in orbit.
It is way to ambitious and complex, but it is what it is so I hope it goes according to plan.
You know, this is boring, what about NASA’s real mission? Is the muslim outreach program back on track? How about their diversity and inclusion programs? Do they have enough transgenders working on this?
The hubble has lasted 20 years. This one requires ongoing fuel consumption as it will be orbiting the sun. It is projected to last 5 years, max 10. Pretty darn expensive at 1 billion a year.
its at the launch site already
OMG article does not state a reason for the delay.
had to dig a little, seen some type of communication between the ariane rocket and ground support equipment.
“Let’s pray that it works.”
Yeah, so much negativism and defeatism on this thread.
