Or the American nightmare. Conservatives have long been misguided in promoting unrestrained capitalism and “free trade”, without insisting that it be guided by Judeo-Christian ethics and morality. Our nation’s founders were keenly aware that freedom, whether economic or political, unrestrained by widespread reliance upon Judeo-Christian morals, would only give license to Man’s worst impulses. It has always been wrong to characterize the “American dream” as nothing more than unrestrained commerce. We are now seeing the fallout of a post-Christian America combined with limitless greed.
The sequence that led to America’s greatness was Faith -> Reliance upon God -> Building a nation with unprecedented freedom, based upon and in deference to God’s principles and moral limits. It was never Unrestrained freedom + capitalism = the “American Dream.” That’s a dangerous myth that leads, as in this example, to maximization of capital at all costs, which eventually leads to chasing the highest return, no matter where it might exist. And that creates nominal “American capitalists” who won’t even think twice about betraying their own nation for an extra buck.
We have no better example of what capitalism unguided by faith in God leads to than today’s Communist China.
It was never Unrestrained freedom + capitalism = the “American Dream.”
That sounds like what became our robber barons of the late 1800’s.
Not a good thing.
